Phenomenon of gear fracture and wear in the gearbox

During the use of the gearbox, some parts may encounter certain situations to some extent. Today, we will use the gear teeth of the gearbox as an example to illustrate!
1、 Reason for gear tooth fracture of reducer:
This situation is actually rare, but it is a serious matter. Because this will cause the gear teeth of the reducer to completely fail, and its occurrence is more common at the root of the teeth. Tooth fracture is generally caused by excessive load or metal fatigue. The fracture surface caused by excessive load is relatively rough. Metals with strong toughness have fibrous fracture surfaces. The reasons for this type of fracture may be excessive impact load, non parallel axis, bearing damage, or metal particles falling into the meshing area of the gearbox teeth.
The fracture caused by metal fatigue is usually formed by the propagation of small cracks over a long period of time. The fracture surface is very smooth, and the starting point of metal fatigue can usually be seen. This type of fracture is caused by repeated bending stresses exceeding the fatigue and limit of the metal. The generation of stress may be due to incorrect gear tooth design, excessive load, or non parallel axis of the gearbox.

2、 Analysis of gear tooth surface wear phenomenon in reducer:
During the meshing process of the gearbox teeth, relative sliding occurs only at the pitch line. Therefore, the two tooth surfaces will inevitably experience wear, and a certain degree of gear tooth wear is normal, especially for new gear teeth; But excessive wear indicates poor lubrication or misalignment of axis parallelism. The initial sign of excessive wear is a slight scratch on the tooth tip, which then develops into more severe scratches or wrinkling due to biting. Scratches usually leave marks on the surface starting from the tooth tip in the same direction as sliding, resembling being dragged and scraped by a hard object. This situation may stop after the break in period. Initial scratches can develop into severe scratches or biting wrinkles, forming numerous grooves or wrinkled marks on the entire tooth tip.
When scratches occur in the early stages, they must be dealt with in a timely manner. If not dealt with in a timely manner, these scratches will cause more serious consequences. Because these scratches with the same sliding direction can scratch the oil film and cause metal contact. The reasons for its formation may be that the gear teeth axis of the reducer is not parallel, the installation is incorrect, the design is wrong, the viscosity of the lubricating oil is too low, the flow rate is insufficient, or the temperature is too high. In addition, dust, impurities, and other contaminants entering the tooth surface will exacerbate wear and tear. In severe cases, the tooth profile may be damaged, resulting in unstable transmission and noise, and even tooth breakage.
